Ireland banning smoking in cars??

I’m not sure how I missed this article last week, but according to Yahoo, ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) have started campaigning to get the Irish government to ban smoking in all cars.

They claim that it’s bad for children. Fair enough, but I don’t have kids – why should I be stopped from smoking in my car with no-one else present?

They claim that it’s dangerous:

Smokers must light up, hold the cigarette, deposit the ash and dispose of the cigarette — all whilst driving.

“If it is not safe to hold a mobile phone while driving — it’s difficult to see how it can be safe to smoke.”

Well, just how dangerous is it compared to putting on lipstick in traffic? Yelling at your kids while looking at them in the rear-view mirror? Changing CD’s or radio station? Using the in-car computer systems or GPS available on higher end car models?

Will they next propose to strip all cars back to the basic models with no radios or other distractions?

ASH – Get a grip!

“They claim that it’s bad for children” What about old ladies?

Calm down or you will never reach old age like me!

How long before smoking in the home is banned? It’s the next logical step. I can see the ASH getting lynched before long.

I don’t smoke, never have (while sober anyway) and never will but this still seems ridiculous to me.
