From Breaking News:

“The changes [to the law] mean people caught drink-driving will face a mandatory one-year ban, compared to the previous minimum of three months.

Motorists who refuse to give a urine or blood sample will now face an automatic four-year ban, while drivers convicted of a second drink-driving offence will be put off the road for at least six years.”

Drink-driving may not be the only thing out there causing deaths on roads, but it’s one of the more easily stoppable ones. Losing your licence for a year is scary, and with the guards catching upwards of 500 people a weekend when they beef up the checks, this will soon make a difference on our roads.

Rural pubs are also apparently closing at the rate of one a day, which will help the drink-driving issue too, since there’s so many people (and politicians) who think they have a god-given right to drunk drive since they live in the countryside.

All in all, it’s not bad – it’s the first thing the government has done to impress me, and I’ve only been living in the country for 4 years!
